Before you apply
A free website can still be serious.
This page explains how Webspansion works before you apply, what is included, what is not, how the process usually goes, and what to expect after the site is delivered. I want everything to be clear from the start.
Apply for a free websiteWhy this exists
Built to close a real gap.
A lot of good businesses, organizations, and community projects are doing real work, but their online presence does not fully show it. Some only have an Instagram page. Some have an outdated website. Some have no website at all. Some simply cannot spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a professional site right now.
Webspansion exists to help close that gap. I build websites for free because I want to use design and code to help real people while also growing as a developer. The goal is not just to make something look nice. The goal is to build a website that helps people trust you faster, understand what you do, and take the next step, whether that means contacting you, booking with you, donating, visiting, joining, or learning more.
Who Webspansion is for
People who need a better website but cannot afford agency prices right now.
You do not need design experience. You do not need to know how websites work. You just need a clear reason why a website would help you.
How it works
From application to launch.
Here is what each stage of the process usually looks like.
-
1
You submit an application
The application helps me understand who you are, what you do, who your audience is, and what problem the website needs to solve. The more clearly you explain your project, the easier it is to understand whether Webspansion is a good fit.
-
2
I review it
I review applications based on fit, impact, feasibility, and my current availability. I usually prioritize nonprofits, community organizations, immigrant-owned businesses, and student groups, but all types are considered. Applying does not guarantee acceptance. That is not because your project is not important. It just means I have to be honest about what I can realistically take on and do well.
-
3
If accepted, we agree on scope
Before I start building, we agree on what the website should include, what pages or sections matter most, what content you need to provide, and what a successful finished site should do for you. Focused projects usually turn out better.
-
4
I build it
I handle the design, development, mobile layout, basic SEO setup, contact forms or simple integrations, and testing. I may share progress at key points so you can give feedback before the final version. I try to keep the process simple, especially if you have never worked on a website before.
-
5
Launch and handoff
Once the site is ready, it goes live and ownership transfers to you. I will guide you through hosting, domain connection, GitHub repository handoff, and anything else you need to understand at launch. You are not locked into Webspansion forever.
What to know
Timeline, what’s included, and what isn’t.
Honest about timing.
Project timelines vary. Most accepted projects take a few weeks, but the exact timing depends on the size of the website, how quickly content is provided, how quickly feedback comes in, and my current workload.
Because Webspansion is free and personally run by me, I would rather be honest about timing than promise a deadline that may not be realistic.

Feedback & revisions
Part of the process, but limited.
I am open to reasonable edits that make the website stronger, clearer, and more useful. That can include adjusting wording, changing a section order, replacing photos, improving spacing, or fixing details after you review the site.
However, Webspansion does not include unlimited revisions, repeated redesigns, or major direction changes after the project has already started.
Hosting & domains
How your site gets online.
Most Webspansion sites can be hosted for free. Here is how it usually works.
Cloudflare Pages
Most Webspansion websites are hosted on Cloudflare Pages, which is free for static sites. It is fast, reliable, and does not require a monthly hosting payment for a basic website. I help set it up and explain the basics during handoff.
Namecheap or your registrar
If you want a custom domain (like yourbusiness.com), you buy it yourself through Namecheap or another registrar so you fully own and control it. Typical cost is around $10–$15 per year. I can guide you through buying it and connecting it to the site.
Webspansion subdomain
Not ready to buy a custom domain yet? I may be able to set up a free Webspansion-based URL as a starting point.
For example: client.getwebspansion.org
This is free, but the URL will include Webspansion in the address. A custom domain looks more professional, but a Webspansion subdomain is a good way to get online first.
Handoff & ownership
You own the site. Fully.
Once the project is finished, the website files and design are yours. There is no ongoing contract, no license fee, and no situation where I can take the site back from you.
Files and GitHub repository
At handoff, I can provide the website files and/or the GitHub repository. The GitHub repo is basically the project folder for the website, including the code and structure that makes the site work.
This matters because you are not locked into me forever. If you ever need simple edits later, the files or repo give you something that a developer, or even an AI tool like Claude or ChatGPT, can reference.
For example, simple text updates, image swaps, or small section changes may be more straightforward when the full project is organized in a repo. Bigger changes should still be handled carefully so the site does not break, but the goal is to give you ownership and flexibility.
Communication
Simple and direct.
Communication usually happens through email, text, or call, whichever makes the most sense for the project. I do not have a dedicated client portal.
I may reach out at key stages: initial acceptance and scope, content collection, design or build progress, review and feedback, and launch or handoff.
Response time may vary depending on school, work, and current projects. If I am slower to reply, it does not mean I forgot about the project. I will follow up.
After launch
The relationship does not have to end at delivery.
Webspansion is mainly a free website build, not unlimited ongoing support. After launch, you can always reach out. I may be able to help with small fixes, simple updates, or quick changes when I have capacity.
However, future edits are limited and not guaranteed. I may say no if the request is too large, outside the original scope, or if I do not have time.
If your application is not accepted
Not every project is the right fit right now.
Sometimes it comes down to timing, capacity, scope, or whether I feel I can realistically do the project well under Webspansion's free model. That is not a judgment on you, your business, your organization, or your idea.
If I cannot grow your project on right now, I will try to be clear about it. You are welcome to apply again later if your needs change or if timing works better in the future.
Frequently asked questions
Things people usually want to know.
Is Webspansion really free?
Yes. Webspansion websites are free when accepted. The main optional cost is a custom domain if you want one, you buy that yourself through Namecheap or another registrar so you fully own it. Hosting can usually be free through Cloudflare Pages. If you are not ready for a custom domain, a free Webspansion-based subdomain may also be possible.
Why do you build websites for free?
I build Webspansion sites for free because I want to use design and code to help real people while improving my skills through real projects. A website can make a business, nonprofit, student group, or community project look more trustworthy and easier to find. Webspansion lets me help people who may not be able to afford that kind of support right now.
Do I own the site after delivery?
Yes. Once the project is finished, the website files and design are yours. No ongoing license fee, no hidden contract, and no way for me to take the site back. Webspansion is built to help you own your online presence, not lock you into something you cannot control.
What about the domain name?
If you want a custom domain, you will usually buy it yourself through Namecheap or another domain registrar. That way, the domain is fully under your name and control. I can guide you through buying it and connecting it to the website. If you are not ready to buy one yet, I may be able to set up a free Webspansion-based subdomain like client.getwebspansion.org as a starting point.
What about hosting?
Most Webspansion sites can be hosted for free on Cloudflare Pages. It is fast, reliable, and a good fit for the type of static websites Webspansion usually builds. I can help set it up and explain the basics during handoff.
Will I get the website files or GitHub repo?
Yes. At handoff, I can provide the website files and/or the GitHub repository. This gives you access to the project structure and code, which makes the website more portable. If you ever need simple changes later, the repo gives you something a developer or AI tool can reference. Bigger changes should still be handled carefully so the site does not break.
Can I edit the site myself after launch?
Yes, depending on your comfort level. Most Webspansion sites are built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, there is usually no complicated CMS login or dashboard. If you are comfortable with basic editing, small text changes may be manageable on your own. If not, you can always reach out and I may be able to help with minor updates when I have time.
Do you offer ongoing maintenance?
Webspansion is not a guaranteed maintenance retainer, I am not automatically monitoring or updating your site every month after launch. But you are always welcome to reach out. If it is a small fix or simple update, I may be able to help depending on my schedule and workload. If it is a bigger request, I may say no, simplify it, or suggest we talk about a separate path forward.
What if there is a bug after launch?
If something breaks because of how the site was built, a form that stops working, a layout issue, a mobile display problem, reach out and I will do my best to look into it. I do not want to leave anyone with a broken website. However, issues caused by outside tools, domain changes, hosting account changes, or edits made after handoff may not always be something I can fix for free.
Can I come back later for a redesign or bigger update?
You can always reach out. A full redesign, new pages, advanced features, or larger upgrades are not guaranteed under the original free Webspansion project. But if it is a small request and I have capacity, I may be able to help. If it is bigger, we can have a separate conversation and figure out the best path forward from there.
What makes a strong application?
A strong application clearly explains what you do, who you help, why you need a website, and what the website should help people do. You do not need perfect wording, just be honest and specific. It helps to explain whether you want people to book appointments, donate, contact you, view your menu, learn about your organization, sign up for something, or trust your business more when they search for you online.
What kind of projects are not a good fit?
Webspansion may not be the right fit for projects that need complex apps, advanced dashboards, full e-commerce systems, constant updates, urgent deadlines, or unlimited design changes. That does not mean the project is bad, it may just be too large or too ongoing for Webspansion's free model.
Ready to apply?
If this sounds like the kind of help your business, organization, or project needs, apply and tell me what you are building. The clearer you are about your goals, the easier it is for me to understand how Webspansion can help.
